Communications & Control Systems Group
The Communications and Control Systems Group comprises two major research concentrations. The control systems concentration consists of four main laboratories: System Cybernetics Research Laboratory, Active Noise Control Laboratory, Modern Control & Application Laboratory, and Systems Control Laboratory. The main research areas are focus on advanced signal processing and control systems integration. The latest research encompasses wide range of designs including state-of-the-art medical devices, active noise control system, green energy conversion, robotics, and system estimation and identification.
There are five faculty members conducting researches in the concentration of Communications and Networking. Our research topics are focus on network coding, image processing, and system design of 5G mobile Communications. The main strengths and specialties include network security, software defined networking and FPGA system design for highspeed networking systems.

System Cybernetics Research Laboratory
● Lab Overview:
System Cybernetics Research Laboratory emphasizes on developing "small", "simple", "smart" medical device based on innovative and miniaturized technology. Major interests include medical device/instrument developments and applications, bio-signal and medical image processing for implanted medical device testing based on ISO 17025 regulatory requirement.
● Research Topics:
.Micro-circulation blood flow measurement. The prototype of (a) arterial pulse measurement, and (b) Automated External Defibrillator (AED) developed by the Lab.

Active Noise Control Laboratory
● Lab Overview:
Located in room 309, the Active Noise Control (ANC) lab is under the management of Prof. Sen M. Kuo and Prof. C. Y. Chang. Here, the research emphasis is on real-time DSP applications. The projects being conducted in the lab are primarily based on active noise control (ANC) systems. The lab is comprised of a diverse range of signal processing equipment, including a number of TMS320C6713 kits, spectrum analyzers, microphones, amplifiers, analog filters, and power amplifiers.
● Research Topics:
ANC systems are used to cancel undesired noise. These systems work on the principle of superposition, i.e., an anti-noise signal of same magnitude but opposite phase is generated to cancel an unwanted primary noise. Typically, the primary noise is picked up by a microphone, is sent to a DSP, which then generates an anti-noise to cancel the original noise. ANC systems support a wide variety of applications. Modern Control and Application Laboratory
● Lab Overview:
The Modern Control and Application Lab is under the management of Prof. C. S. Chiu. The objective of this lab is developing new control theory, solving complex control problem, and realizing creative applications. The control theory and implementation technology are integrated to improve control performance of advanced systems. Major research interests include nonlinear control and applications, green energy conversion system, robotic control systems.

Systems Control Laboratory

Computer Networks & Systems Research Laboratory
● Lab Overview:  
Traffic analysis and measurement are important tasks for the proper operation of IP networks. The accurate estimation of Internet traffic statistics serves as the basis for infrastructure planning, network provisioning, capacity forecasting and accounting. Anomaly detection on worm distribution and prevention of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are also based on the same information. However, as network bandwidth grows exponentially, the scaling of monitoring and measuring capabilities for collecting accurate statistics becomes a critical issue.
Students at CNSRL are currently working on projects sponsored by government and industry on topics related to high-speed network traffic measurement, software defined networking and network security for Smart Grid systems. We are exploring advanced hardware and software techniques on heterogeneous computing platforms to achieve greater system performance. Coding Theory Research Laboratory
● Lab Overview:  
Located in room 501B, the Coding Theory Research Laboratory (CTRL) lab is under the management of Prof. Jia-Yin Wang. Here, the research emphasis is on communication coding theory, includes error control coding, source coding, network coding, and their applications. In recent years, we also develop some Internet, Android and RFID applications.

Signal and Image Processing Lab
 
● Lab Overview:  
In this lab, the main research areas include digital signal processing and digital image processing. Fractional signal transforms are generalizations of conventional signal transforms with additional free parameters. Currently, the researches of Signal and Image Processing Lab focus on discrete fractional signal transforms and their applications as well as digital image halftoning.
